Wouldn't the person that " knows what he's doing regards if the player is good enough" be head of recruitment? Or could the girl in the chippy or the launderette, or even a steelworker do the job cos it's easy.

Great question.  gwru seems to be saying that if he was manager he would employ a recruitment expert to help with recruitment.  Now there's a novel idea.  Or are we missing something?

TC & smiler if like you say we have professionals being paid in charge of recruitment why have we ended up with a midfield 3 we started with Saturday so ineffective it was painful to watch. Did Evans have a head of recruitment? don't think so. In the end he always got a side together that could compete in the level we were playing at.

It is looking that the recruitment has been poor in the midfield area none existent in the wide areas. We have to change the system the match tonight play 442 or we will be over powered in the middle of the park. It is an ideal game to try it has got to be dawning on the manager that the players are not comfortable with the present system Question for you millers when was the last time we won at home it is that long ago I can't remember.

I was critical of the Lincoln performance but that does not mean I have written off the new players or the system. It is far too early to judge.

We have a scouting system that needs time and because they recommend players to the club there are all sorts of reasons why players do not sign for the club. To sign sub standards wingers just puts us in the same position of last season. I, however, do not think we have a big enough squad particularly if you let players go out on loan this early. I find it interesting that we move to a system that would suit Jerry Yates and then we let him go. This must be that the club do not think he is good enough.

Anyway, two league games in and we will struggle and the manager needs sacking seems to be a total over reaction.

Fair observations villapark. Gwru, Evans' brother Gee was paid to be chief scout / head of recruitment. He did a similar job for Steve at other clubs. The number of players we signed under Evans, he must have been a very busy man, and presumably Steve thought Gee was the best man for the job. The number of players we signed who hardly played before leaving might suggest that he didnt always get it right, and the number of players that we signed that had played for Evans before might suggest that he might not have been as busy as he appeared, but we did sign some good players in that era as well as many who didnt work out. Employing his brother and signing his former players - if you were a cynic you might say it was a bit of an old pals act - not that I am. Let's leave Evans in the past though. He left us a long time ago for a club that matched his ambition. Good luck to him at Gillingham. You've described a system where you wouldn't need a head of recruitment because it's such an easy job spotting talent (interesting in itself coming from someone who wrote Olosunde off after half a friendly and wanted to build a team around Darnelle Bailey-King) - instead you would have someone who knows how to spot a player to go out and find/assess them. What job title would you give that person? You haven't answered that yet.

Agree with THmiller 4-4-2 from now on. 4-3-3 is a busted flush. smiler if I get it wrong ie Olosunde I'll say. 1st impressions aren't usually far off. Crooks hasn't changed my mind from day 1. When he came on as sub for the 1st time he didn't look a footballer, still doesn't. Macdonald could see straight away he's another Potter. Mates signing past his sell by date.

PW has said he is now looking for wingers because we have no plan B. It was obvious from Saturday that we had nobody who could come on and change the style we were playing. In putting Morris,Proctor and Wiles on it was changing like for like. I don't think anybody can argue with that. Last season we had no strikers who could come on and give us an option of playing two up top. It could be argued he shouldn't have let David Ball go but he struggled to make an impact in Div 1 with Bradford so the decision to move him on was correct imo.

People are now saying why did we let all four wingers go. Well, we offered all four contracts but they chose to move on. Was it lack of opportunities , more money, thinking they are better than what they are or something else i don't know. I said at the end of last season i thought it would be a mistake to let all four go even though i thought all four were ordinary. It has restricted what we can do this season and it could be argued that all four played their part in our promotion season.

The problem we have now is that we are scrambling around looking for wingers that nobody seems to want. Unless, and this is a big ask. Can we make an offer (decent money) to get a bit of quality in wide. I will criticise the management team here. I believe they thought our three forwards would steam roller this division and it would be no great loss to not play with wingers. As said by many this is a division where sides like Lincoln will come and scrap, put their bodies in front of everything and carry a fair slice of luck. Imo its not just wingers we want. I still believe there is no leader to organise from set pieces against us and we also lack bite in the middle of the park. I might be asking for too much but believe a strong central defender, an older head in the centre of midfield and at least one wide man would give us a great chance of promotion. Warne knows most of this and will be striving to get people in to give us something different. Please don't judge on what we do tonight. I would give all the fringe players a go. The important game this week is Saturday.

To answer your question Th. The last time we won at home was on April 6th when we beat Forest 2-1. After that we played Villa, Birmingham and middlesbrough. So after we lost on Saturday we have now gone four home games without a win. I presume you are not counting the friendlies and The mickey mouse cup.

whiston01 your posts I can't fault. They are your views. Two points best transfer window we've had for getting shut of surplus players Potter Forde Taylor Newell Palmer Yates Towell Vyner glad to see the back of all them. I might have missed someone. You say get an experienced head in midfield. Isn't Macdonald that? That's not looking very promising. Sooner get the next Vaulks in midfield.

I'm totally unclear now whether you think we should have a recruitment person at the club, or whether we would have such a person if we were lucky enough to have you in charge.  So far you have said both yes and no.  As usual rather than deal with the point sensibly you just plough on regardless with your blind certainty that you have it nailed.

Never mind.

That's a fair point Gwru about MacDonald. It looks like he prefers to get more forward and Barlaser is the holding type. It's early days for these two but Saturday i thought we lacked in both areas. Another one in would help.

I thought MacDonald actually did ok. He was unlucky with the own goal and unlucky not to score with his header at 1-0. Credit to him for timing a good run and getting on the end of a cross. People will look and say that he scored in his own net and missed a good chance, but on another day those two things go differently and he is a hero. It can be a cruel game.

Barlaser did alright early on but got caught in possession a couple of times around half time and his confidence seemed to drain very quickly, but he clearly has some ability. I thought he was trying too hard and lost his way a bit.

Crooks was a bit disappointing. I am a fan of his but we were relying on him to get it to feet in advanced areas and make things happen and he wasn't really able to influence the game much. Wiles didn't do any better but to be fair to him the pattern of the game was set by then and it was difficult for him.

They weren't helped by the front three all running away from them all the time. They were operating as three individuals. Not deliberately I hasten to add - just a case of getting used to what we need from them as a unit.

The players' frustration and disappointment was plain to see and I am sure they will work hard to put things right. There was a lack of cohesion. That will come. We still had far more possession of the ball and made far more chances than a decent Lincoln team, although we lost the game which is all that really matters when push comes to shove.

That's how I saw it.

Rotherham fans are well known for picking scapegoats quite quickly. Kevin Watson springs to mind from the distant past but there have been many others. Last season Vyner copped it. I hope the supporters aren't in too much of a hurry to find the next one - it doesn't help anyone.
